OPEN SIGN PROJECT
KEEPING LOCAL OPEN SIGNS ON BY CONNECTING THE RICHMOND COMMUNITY
A new initiative started with my classmates to celebrate the resilience of Richmond small businesses and philanthropies.
March 2021 would mark a year since COVID locked down the country. The winter break leading up to it, Payal Pereira, Brittany Reid, Dani Loleng, and Kate Power, and I founded an initiative called The Open Sign Project, to find creative ways to celebrate all that Richmond's business owners had achieved within that year.
We focused first our attention on a single cause: Making Meals Matter.
We created a calendar to highlight 12 Black-owned restaurants in Richmond and gave 100% of the profits to RVA Community Fridges, a local organization dedicated to fighting food insecurity.
We have over $1,000 raised and 180 calendars sold, with calendars hanging nationally, abroad, and in retail stores in Richmond.
Now, we're thinking about our next initiative so stay tuned!
